Besides a couple of mid-range phones, HTC didn’t have much to show at this year’s Mobile World Congress. That hasn’t stopped the company from hyping one of its future announcements, though.
In an interview with CNET, HTC CEO Cher Wang said, “When HTC comes out with a smartwatch, we will turn the industry on its head.”
HTC has been rumoured to be working on some kind of smartwatch since at least 2013. More recently, noted leaker Evan Blass tweeted at the start of the month that the company’s smartwatch, rumoured to be called the HTC One, will be announced “before the end of April.” He also noted HTC will announce its new flagship smartphone, the One M10 we’ve seen multiple recent leaks and teases, at the same time.
We’ll have to wait and see whether a smartwatch is enough to help HTC turn its fortunes around. At least in Canada, a new IDC report, published earlier this week, says most Canadians don’t own a smartwatch, nor do they plan to purchase one in the future.
