After first launching in Toronto at the end of last month, UberAssist, Uber’s door-to-door transport service aimed at consumers with accessibility needs, will soon be available in the nation’s capital.
Launching today at 3:00 PM, Ottawa area residents can request an UberAssist ride directly from the company’s existing app.
To do so, launch the Uber app and move the slider located at the bottom of the screen to UberAssist. Select a pickup location and then request a ride. Users can contact their driver through the app to provide any specific pickup instructions prior to the driver arriving. Moreover, friends and family members can request an UberAssist ride courtesy of their loved one.
Consumers who take a ride with UberAssist can expect to pay as much as they would were they instead to take UberX.
To ensure those customers using UberAssist are given the proper care and attention, only Uber drivers with a 4.6 or higher star rating (the maximum rating a driver can earn is five stars) can sign up to drive for UberAssist. Each driver must also complete an in-person training course developed by several prominent Canadian accessibility-focused organizations, including the OCAD Inclusive Design Institute and The Centre for Independent Living in Toronto, among others.
Over the course of this week, Uber Canada will donate its portion of revenue derived from Ottawa area UberAssist rides to the Ottawa Independent Living Resource Centre.
