Twitter won the rights to live stream NFL Thursday Night Football for free on its platform, but the Canadian arm of the social media platform has confirmed to MobileSyrup that the content will not be available to viewers in Canada.
The social media platform and NFL released a joint statement today announcing it will broadcast 10 live NFL games this year to a potential audience of 800M registered and non-registered users. That estimation, however, may be based on total worldwide users, which does not take in to account the fact that the games will not be available for live streaming in all countries. This restricts what today’s statement calls a “global audience.”
In addition to live streaming, Twitter will also feature in-game highlights and pre-game broadcasts from players and teams on the Twitter-owned live streaming app Periscope.
“People watch NFL games with Twitter today,” said Jack Dorsey, CEO of Twitter, in the statement released this morning, “Now they’ll be able to watch right on Twitter Thursday nights.”
The social media platform beat out other digital heavyweights such as Amazon, Verizon and Facebook to secure the deal. The NFL broke ground last year in June by partnering with Yahoo to offer their first free, globally-accessible livestream game. Yahoo reported they reached 15.2M unique viewers during the event.
The broadcast will also run NBC, CBS and the NFL Network.
