Microsoft Canada has announced a new trade-in offer towards the Lumia 950 and 950 XL. Trade in a Lumia 920, 925, or 1020, and save a flat $200 off one of the new Continuum-enabled Lumia device. The promo is valid starting today, and ends June 30th.
As you may expect the phone needs to be working, the screen and housing cannot be cracked, there can’t be evidence of liquid damage, it must come with the charger, and you can’t have modified the device or broken the warranty seal.
The Lumia 920 was originally released in late 2012 and the Lumia 1020 was initially launched in mid-2013. Both sold initially in the $550-650 range in Canada, so them commanding a $200 trade-in three years later is surprisingly high. It’s especially generous given that (as of the writing of this article) I was able to find “Buy It Now” examples of each for less than $200 Canadian on eBay. That suggests this offer may be as much about Microsoft managing its reputation with fans, as it is about wanting to take the devices in on trade.
The inclusion of the Lumia 925 is interesting as that device was never officially released in Canada, but it was a cult favourite with many importers due to its metal housing, vs. the polycarbonate housing of most other Lumias of the era.
Microsoft appears to be running a similar promo in the U.S. for a $150 trade-in credit, which means that after currency exchange the trade-in promo is slightly more generous in Canada.
You can access the promo from this link here. If the trade-in is accepted, you’ll get a discount code to use with Microsoft’s online store, and must redeem it by the end of July.
