Starting today, Microsoft Canada is offering a free Lumia 950, if you purchase a Lumia 950 XL. The offer is available at Microsoft’s seven stores in Canada and is available to all Canadians online.
Both phones feature Gorilla Glass 1444 x 2560 pixel displays, 20MP cameras with Zeiss optics, expandable storage via microSD, run Windows 10 Mobile, and can create a PC-like experience via Continuum.
The Lumia 950 XL sells for $849 with an octa-core processor and a 5.7-inch screen. The Lumia 950 features a hexa-core processor, 5.2-inch screen, and sells for $749 in Canada. Together both smartphones would normally cost $1598 plus taxes, making this a price reduction of 47 percent for those interested in picking up the handsets.
This is the second aggressive pricing move by Microsoft Canada, after earlier pricing the Lumia 650 at $199 in Canada despite Microsoft’s U.S. stores selling the same handset for $199 USD.
The free Lumia 950 offer is valid until May 1st, and in case you’re looking for a total of four Lumia flagships, there is a limit of two offers per customer. It notes that it may not be combinable with other offers, so you may not also get $200 off by trading in your venerable old Lumia 920, 925, or 1020.
Microsoft only sold 2.3 million Lumias last quarter, so it looks like this deal could be a move to address that. It also could be an effort on Microsoft’s part to get rid of excess inventory.
