Despite the NX’s 2017 release date looming on the horizon, Nintendo has revealed that it had no plans to show off its handheld-console hybrid device at this year’s E3.
“For our dedicated video game platform business, Nintendo is currently developing a gaming platform codenamed ‘NX’ with a brand-new concept,” the company said. “NX will be launched in March 2017 globally,” said Nintendo in a statement sent to MobileSyrup.
Nintendo also revealed that it plans to release both a Wii U version and an NX port of its upcoming The Legend of Zelda game in 2016. This entry in the Zelda franchise, was originally shown off in 2014, with a scheduled 2016 release date, but was then pushed back to 2017.
While not much is known about the NX, it’s believed Nintendo’s upcoming video game system will operate as a home console/handheld hybrid, allowing players to play games at home on a television, but also replicate that experience on the go via a handheld gaming device.
A 2017 release date for the NX means that the Wii U owners will have very little to look forward to in 2016, especially now that Star Fox Zero has released to middling reviews, and third-party developer support for the console has completely disappeared.
