In its first-ever Google Play Awards at I/O 2016, Google handed the honour of best app to home-design tool Houzz and titled mobile strategy blockbuster Clash Royale, the year’s best Android game.
In a statement to developers, Google said it was impressed by how the Play Store has progressed over the years.
“We’re now reaching over 1 billion users every month and there’s literally something for everyone. From real-time multiplayer to beautiful Indie games, industry changing startups to innovative uses of mobile technology, developers like you continue to push the boundaries of what apps can do.”
Google gave out the awards at a dedicated ceremony during the Google I/O developer conference, kicking off awards that are expected to be a yearly part of the event. In its release, Google noted that the winners were selected by the Google Play team based on criteria emphasizing app quality, innovation, and having a launch or major update in the last 12 months.
Other categories included best use of material design, which was taken home by the team that created stock-trading app Robinhood, best families app, which went to logic puzzler Thinkrolls 2 and Most Innovative, which was awarded to VR app NYT VR.
