Apple rumoured to announce iMessage for Android at WWDC

A rumour has emerged ahead of next week’s WWDC 2016 that could see Apple open up its popular messaging app to Android users.

According to MacDailyNews, who cites sources “familiar with the company’s thinking,” Apple “will announce that iMessage encrypted text messaging is coming to Android users at WWDC next Monday.”

If true, this will enable both iOS (iPhone, iPad or iPod Touch) and Android users to have secure communication with end-to-end encryption.

In February, during a conversation with Daring Fireball, Eddie Cue stated the number of iMessages sent has surpassed 200,000 per second.

Apple has slowly expanded its offerings beyond its own platform, specifically with three Android apps within the past year, including Apple Music, Move to iOS, and Beats Pill.
