Telus has announced it is planning to expand its fibre optic network in Greater Montreal with a $111 million investment in necessary infrastructure. By the end of 2016, states the company in a release, the network will stretch over 4,000km.
“Montrealers know us primarily as a wireless company, and may not know that Telus has 3,500 team members in Montreal dedicated to helping businesses and the healthcare system thrive by facilitating their adoption of new communications technologies,” said François Gratton, executive vice-president and president of Business Solutions East and Telus Québec, respectively.
The expansion is set to increase the network’s transmission capacity and extend its reach to areas such as Old Montreal, Anjou, Boucherville, Dorval, Ile-Bizard, Pierrefonds and Pointe Claire.
Additionally, Telus is adding indoor distributed antenna systems (DAS) — networks that provide wireless service within a geographic area or structure — in various health and education facilities this year, such as Montreal University, the Jewish General Hospital, and the McGill University Health Centre.
This is one of the telecom’s first steps in its planned $2 billion investment into Quebec infrastructure announced earlier this year and continuing to 2020. Telus says this project contributes to an expected $340 million this year alone.
Other focuses of investment in the province will include improving wireless networks, growing the adoption of IoT solutions, promoting cloud services and extending its electronic medical records business.
