Considering that most mid-range and even some high-end PCs have difficulty rendering games in 4K, it’s understandable there’s been some doubt as to whether or not Microsoft’s upcoming Project Scorpio would actually be able to play games in ultra high-definition.
In a recent interview with USA Today, Shannon Loftis, general manager of Microsoft Studios’ publishing, says that all first-party games released for Scorpio will run in native 4K. Loftis, however, doesn’t specify what titles will run in 4K, which isn’t surprising given the console’s release is about a year away.
The company’s recently released Xbox One S is capable of playing physical discs and streaming content in 4K, but only supports 4K upscaling for gaming. Sony’s recently revealed PlayStation 4 Pro, which has a November 10th release date, will feature some 4K capable games, though Sony says it’s up to developers to decide whether or not they want to support the resolution.
On paper at least, the PS4 Pro and Microsoft’s Project Scorpio are very similar specs wise. One thing is for sure, this is set to continue to be an interesting and unprecedented console generation.
