Microsoft announced today that Dolby Atmos surround-sound support is coming to its Xbox One S and Xbox One game consoles. Released for cinemas in 2012, and announced for home theatres in 2014, Atmos is Dolby’s highest-end surround-sound product and is the audio component of the Dolby Cinema specification.
The technology will be available for Blu-Ray discs initially, and there’s no word yet on whether the feature will also be coming to video games. Dobly Atmos is set to be available in 2017 as part of the Creators Update for Xbox One S and Xbox One, arriving via bitstream.
Update 10/26/16: Microsoft has confirmed to MobileSyrup that the update will be available for both the Xbox One S and Xbox One.
