Huawei wants to surpass Apple’s share of the smartphone market in the next two years

Despite only recently makings its way to North America, China-based Huawei has actually been manufacturing smartphones for over four years now. The company now says it has the lofty goal of becoming one of the largest Android manufactures in the market, surpassing the likes of both Samsung and even Apple.

Currently Huawei covers approximately 9 percent of the smartphone industry, amounting to about 33 million devices, with Apple sitting at 12 percent (45 million) and Samsung landing at 20 percent (75 million). Third place is impressive for a new company, but apparently that’s not enough for Huawei.

Huawei surpassing both Apple and Samsung is an almost insurmountable task, but according to Richard Yu, the company’s chief executive officer, this is exactly what the company wants to accomplish.

“When we announced four years ago that we wanted to sell phones, people told us we were crazy. When we said we wanted to sell 100 million phones, they told us we were crazy. We are going to take them (Apple) step-by-step, innovation-by-innovation. There will be more opportunities. Artificial intelligence, virtual reality, augmented reality. It is like driving a car. At every curve or turn, there is an opportunity to overtake the competition. Step-by-step we are winning the trust and loyalty of the customers. It is about trust and loyalty,” said Yu in an interview with Reuters.

Huawei most recently launched the mid-range Nova Plus in Canada. The company’s most notable high-end release in Canada is the Nexus 6P, a smartphone the company released in partnership with Google last year.
