The federal government has finally filled the Canadian Radio Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) role that was left empty for the past year.
Judith LaRocque has been appointed as the vice chair of the CRTC as of November 14th. The CRTC has been stalling hearings in Quebec because it fell short of three francophone representatives as is the standard.
As a francophone, LaRocque’s appointment allows the CRTC to go forward with the broadcast license renewals in Laval this coming week.
LaRocque will work under CRTC Chairman Jean-Pierre Blais for the duration of her six-month contract. Because of the short length of the contract, it’s been speculated that she might take over as chairman when Blais’ term expires this coming spring.
LaRocque has served as the deputy minister at the Department of Canadian Heritage from 2002 to 2010 and as an ambassador at the Organization for Economic Co-Operation and Development in Paris.
“Her experience will be invaluable to our work, which is to ensure that Canadians are at the centre of their communication system,” the CRTC posted on Twitter.
