Lack of access to affordable internet has become a key issue in Canada over the last few years.
In an effort to help improve the situation, Telus has launched the Internet for Good program to provide low-cost internet to single parent families receiving financial support through the Alberta Works Income Support and Assured Income for the Severely Handicapped programs.
The program will offer $9.95 per month internet services to 15,000 single-parent families that are already receiving support from the above organizations by sending coupon codes in the mail in early 2017. The service will reach download speeds of 25Mbps and are capped at 350GB of data per month. An equivalent plan with a 300GB cap comes in at $73 per month at full retail price.
The pilot program, Telus states in the release, is entirely funded by the company, with no government assistance.
“From applying for a job, to accessing online learning, to connecting with distant loved ones, to virtually experiencing vibrant art and music, Internet connectivity will ensure these families are empowered to reach their full potential in our increasingly digital society,” stated Telus CEO Darren Enwistle in the release.
In addition, the company is partnering with Alberta Computers for Schools to provide those families in need of a computer with a refurbished desktop or laptop PC at a low rate. The company is also offering three educational programs alongside the offering: an internet safety program called Telus Wise, a digital literacy program in partnership with the Alberta Library system and an online music education program with the Royal Conservatory.
Telus is not the only carrier to support and provide internet access initiatives: Rogers’ Connect for Success program offers $9.99 internet with a 10Mbps download speed to individuals living in social housing communities across Ontario, New Brunswick and Newfoundland.
