Waterloo-based Kik has launched a much-requested feature on its popular messaging platform: video chat.
To try the feature, users must click the video chat button in the upper right-hand corner of the app. The feature works for one-on-one chats and group chats with up to six people. Users can also share content such as photos, stickers and GIFs while video chatting. The company also noted in its announcement post that it would be revealing more video chat features in 2017.
Kik’s competitors, chiefly Facebook properties Messenger and WhatsApp, both have video chatting capabilities. WhatsApp video calling became available to Canadians mid-November 2016, while Messenger introduced video calling in April 2015. Additionally, Messenger has just amped up competition by announcing group video chat on the same day as Kik’s video chat debut.
