Rumours are starting to crop up again regarding Apple entering the original content industry.
As reported by The Wall Street Journal, Apple is reportedly warming up to the idea of purchasing scripted television series created by outside producers, and is looking to compete directly with popular series like HBO’s Westworld and Netflix’s Stranger Things.
The still unannounced television series will reportedly be bundled with Apple Music, the company’s $9.99 per month music streaming service, in an effort to diversify its offerings from Spotify.
According to The Journal, Apple’s ultimate goal is not to compete directly with Netflix or Amazon, or original cable services for that matter. Instead, the company only aims to differentiate its service from competitors. While the timeline for the release of original video content on Apple Music remains unclear, speculation points to a launch before the end of the year.
It is possible, however, that these reports are pointing to the Dr. Dre original series the company already has in the works. Apple is also working on a spinoff of James Corden’s Carpool Karaoke segment.
If the Apple does delve into additional scripted original content, with the goal of producing high-quality television programming, it’s likely that the Cupertino, California-based company will do so tepidly and with a comparably small amount of financial investment.
On the other hand, if the company were to take the launch of original content more seriously, given its massive coffers of money, it would be interesting to see Apple launch a direct competitor that can take on the likes of streaming giants such as Netflix and Amazon.
