Microsoft recently named LinkedIn senior vice president of infrastructure Kevin Scott as the company’s chief technology officer.

This newly created role further expands on Scott’s previous position with LinkedIn, and will see him maximize Microsoft’s impact with members and customers.

“The thing that gets me up in the morning and that has always excited me about technology is its role in empowering people and helping to enrich their lives,” Scott said in a statement. “I am very optimistic about where Microsoft is headed and how we can continue to use technology to solve some of society’s most important challenges.”

As of now, Scott will report directly to Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella, though he won’t be leaving his role with LinkedIn entirely and will continue to serve its a SVP of infrastructure. In addition, Scott will remain on LinkedIn’s executive management team.

This announcement comes shortly after LinkedIn’s desktop redesign, which has been hinted at since the company was acquired by Microsoft.
