New Google Job listing indicates tech giant has further virtual reality ambitions

Daydream VR - Google VR

Following the release of Google’s Daydream View VR headset late last year, marking the tech giant’s first serious foray into virtual reality, it looks like the Mountain View, California-based company could have even greater VR ambitions.

New job postings indicate that Google plans to further delve into the development of more virtual reality products. New hardware related job postings include an electrical engineer for the company’s AR/VR team that would, “lead electrical hardware development for consumer electronic products from concept into production,” and has “experience supporting high-volume overseas manufacturing builds.”

The company has also listed a job entitled ‘technical lead product design engineer,’ as well as ‘hardware validation manager,’ with both positions focused on the company’s future augmented reality and virtual reality plans.

While the Daydream View is a relatively low-cost headset — coming in at just $99 CAD — Google has long been rumoured to be working on a standalone virtual reality headset designed to compete with the HTC Vive and the Oculus Rift.

All-in-one virtual reality headsets have several advantages over those that are powered by a smartphone, including increased power, better resolution and additional sensor technology related to hand-tracking and room-scale. They also, typically, are powered by a high-end and often times expensive PC. It’s unclear if whatever Google is working on will be completely standalone, or if it will need to be tethered to a computer to operate.

The company also could be working on the next generation of Google Glass, though it’s unclear if the company has abandoned the project in favour of glasses more focused on augmented reality.
