Google Play Music latest update gives users greater control over their music’s playback quality

Google Play Music

With its latest update to Play Music, Google has added several long overdue features to its often overlooked music streaming app, giving users greater control over playback quality.

Prior to the latest version of the app, 7.5.4518, Play Music users could only adjust wireless streaming playback quality. Post 7.5, users now have control over Wi-Fi streaming quality and download quality.

By default, Wi-Fi streaming quality is set to “Always High,” ensuring that users don’t need to dig into Play Music’s setting menu when they first download the app to get an optimal Wi-Fi listening experience. That said, it’s possible to adjust Wi-Fi streaming quality to “Low,” “‘Normal” and “High,” as well. Google, however, doesn’t elaborate what those presets mean in terms of bitrate and compression quality.

Download quality is similarly divided between “Low,” “Normal” and “High” presets. By default, download quality is set to ‘Normal’. Therefore, depending on their storage situation, users have some wiggle room when it comes to how much space they devote to their music library.

All the settings mentioned above can be accessed by pulling the navigation bar from the side of the menu and tapping on the settings subsection.

Google is currently rolling out Play Music 7.5.4518 to users across the globe.
