Lowe’s Canada is debuting Holoroom How To, a virtual reality DIY skills workshop, in a Lowe’s store in Burlington, Ontario this month, with the experience set to launch in a Beloeil, Québec RONA, a few weeks after. The same experience launched for the first time in Boston, Massachusetts, earlier this month.

In Holoroom How To, users put on an HTC Vive VR headset and are transported to a DIY project, such as tiling, where they are given step-by-step instructions to complete the task. For instance, in a They’ll walk-through a how to on everything from mixing the mortar to laying the pattern. Haptic feedback adds to the realism of the experience by providing sensations like the vibration of a drill.

“During the past three years, we have been exploring real-life applications of augmented and virtual reality experiences to directly help our customers solve everyday problems,” said Kyle Nel, executive director of Lowe’s Innovation Labs in a press statement. “Our experience has shown that customers are embracing AR/VR as part of their home improvement journey, and now, we are using immersive VR to help our customers learn the required skills to complete challenging home improvement projects.”

Lowe’s says that over the course of several months it will evaluate customer response to the pilot in order to gauge how the technology affects customer confidence and learning.

Lowe’s first launched a virtual reality Holoroom experience in 2014, making it available for six months in two Toronto stores. The next version of the Holoroom was available in 19 stores across the U.S. beginning in November 2015.
