Huawei wins $15 million CAD patent infringement lawsuit against Samsung

Samsung Galaxy S7

Between the arrest of its de-facto leader and the Note 7’s flame up, it’s fair to say Samsung has not had it easy these past 12 months. Now add a lost court case to the company’s list of growing setbacks.

On Thursday, a court in mainland China ordered three in-country Samsung Electronics subsidiaries to pay $80 million yuan ($15.57 million CAD) to Huawei as part of a patent infringement lawsuit, according to Reuters. Huawei successfully argued that the three firms, as well as two Chinese companies, had infringed on its intellectual property by selling 20 different Samsung smartphones and tablets..

A spokesperson for Huawei told Reuters the company welcomed the court’s decision. Samsung, meanwhile, has decided to examine the case before issuing an official comment. It’s unclear whether the company plans to appeal the decision.

Unfortunately for Samsung, this is just the first verdict in several ongoing patent lawsuits involving Huawei. The two companies are involved in a similar suit in the U.S. Of course, Samsung is no stranger to patent cases. The company is still locked in its half-decade long suit with Apple.
