Apple HomeKit-powered Friday Lock now available for pre-order in Canada

Friday Labs’ smart lock, which it says is the smallest in the world, is now available for pre-order in Canada. The project was originally funded on Indiegogo in 2015, making 140 percent of its target with nearly $180,000 USD being raised. Shipments are now underway for backers.

To design the lock, Friday Labs collaborated with Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), the architects behind Google’s new HQ and Hyperloop One. Labs says that the Friday Lock is the only lock to offer Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and Apple’s HomeKit technology all in one product. With the HomeKit, no locksmith is needed. A compatible smartphone app is also available to control the lock from the user’s phone.

The lock features changeable cover shells made from die-cast metal that come in copper, bronze, gun metal, brass, silver, nickel satin and porcelain colour variants. All of the colours can be ordered from Friday Labs’ site except for nickel satin, which so far is only confirmed to be exclusive to Best Buys in America.

One of the lock’s most touted features is its Universal Baseplate, which is used to mount Friday Lock over the footprint of the previous lock. Friday Labs says this is “the first solution to require only a single color-coded plate,” which will make it simple to match a door to an install.

Friday Labs says it will add Wi-Fi support “soon.”

The Lock is priced at $249.99 USD, which is about $342 CAD.

Friday Lock can be purchased starting today in Canada, the U.S. and certain other territories, with orders expected to ship in 3-4 weeks.
