On May 14th, SaskTel, the Saskatchewan-based telecommunications company, predicts it will be another busy Mother’s Day.

The company expects its customers will make approximately 1,130,000 calls on Sunday. Of those, the company expects 330,000 will come via landline, while the majority, 800,000 calls in total, will likely come from wireless devices, says SaskTel.

SaskTel also forecasts customers will send more than 10 million text messages and use approximately 97,000GB of data throughout the day.

With SaskTel’s predictions, it’s clear that many do not get the chance to spend time with their mothers on the day. However, telecommunication technology has still made it possible to stay connected.

“Year over year we see the amount of network traffic continue to grow and evolve, shifting from home phone calls to cellphone calls, text messages, data messages, and video calls,” said Ron Styles, SaskTel president and CEO, in a statement.

According to Styles, he feels “pride and satisfaction” because of how SaskTel is able to connect its customers on Mother’s Day and every other day of the year.

SaskTel prepared tips to help those who still want to pick up the phone and call their mothers.

To forego delays or any busy signals, customers should avoid calling their mothers between 10am and 2pm and from 7:30pm to 10pm.

  • Avoid using an operator and direct dial your mom, as a long wait is expected.
  • Check the number before dialing to avoid the awkward accidental call — though people should always do this.
  • To consider time zones, Canada has six different time zones so if you’re calling your mom who lives in another province or territory it’s likely they live in a different time zone.
