Bell Canada customer information illegally accessed in hack

Bell building

An anonymous hacker has illegally accessed the information of Bell customers, the media company announced Monday. Bell says the obtained information includes email addresses, customer names and/or telephone numbers.

Bell says there is no indication that sensitive financial, password or other personal information was accessed.

Altogether, the illegally accessed information was made up of roughly 1.9 million active email addresses and approximately 1,700 names and active phone numbers.

Bell says it apologizes to customers for the situation and is directly contacting those who are affected. However, it’s currently unclear how many people may have actually had their information compromised in this hack.

The company says it has been working closely with the RCMP cyber crime unit to investigate the hacking and has also informed the Office of the Privacy Commissioner. Bell says the incidents are unrelated to the recent global WannaCry malware attacks.

Update 05/16/17: Canadian privacy commissioner Daniel Therrien said his office is currently reviewing the hacking. According to him, a fuller report is expected to be released later today. Bell says all affected customers will be notified by end of day as well.
