LG will being rolling out its first-ever OLED smartphone in the third quarter of 2017, according to a report by The Investor.
The South Korean news site says that industry sources note the V30, LG’s upcoming successor to the 5.7-inch V20, is likely to come with an OLED screen and release in September.
The company’s next flagship phone, tentatively called the G7, will also reportedly release next year with an OLED screen.
“Most OLED screens produced at LG Display’s Gumi E5 plant in the second half will be used for its sister firm LG Electronics’ smartphones starting with the V30,” an anonymous source told The Investor.
“Some of the OLED production will be supplied to Chinese phone makers who are hoping to catch up with front-runners such as Samsung and Apple.”
Production on the OLED panels is said to start in July.
Samsung currently dominates OLED smartphones, with the company’s display-making unit producing more than 95 percent of the screens used in current devices. Almost 70 percent of Samsung’s own smartphones use OLED as well.
There are also rumours that Apple is set to release its first iPhone with an OLED screen later this year, and has even reportedly already ordered 60 million of the displays from Samsung.
