BlackBerry is partnering with automakers to develop a security service that would remotely scan vehicles for computer viruses, according to a financial analyst. To do this, security patches would reportedly be able to be installed into idle vehicles.
Gus Papageorgiou, analyst for financial services firm Macquarie, told his clients that the service is currently being tested by luxury automakers Aston Martin and Range Rover.
Spokespeople for BlackBerry declined to comment on such a product, BNN said. Matthew Clarke, a spokesman for Aston Martin, told BNN in an e-mail he wasn’t aware of the company testing such a product. Range Rover representatives could not be reached for comment.
Papageorgiou, who has followed BlackBerry news for over 15 years, said the service could be launched as early as 2018. The service is expected to net about $10 USD (approximately $13.60) a month per vehicle for BlackBerry.
