Ontario Provincial Police may be able to avoid high-speed car chases in the near-future.
In a media conference, a pilot project was announced that will arm police with laser-aimed darts armed with GPS technology, which will be used to track fleeing vehicles.
The projectiles will launch from the front grille of police cars and stick to surfaces using adhesives and magnets.
The OPP says this will allow officers to safely follow suspects without needing to engage in a pursuit that could put civilians at risk.
So far, three vehicles have been deployed with this technology, which the OPP says will start rolling out this weekend, in time for Victoria Day.
A similar initiative was revealed by police in Delta, British Columbia earlier this year.
