Ontario considering offering system to renew health cards online

Service Ontario location front

If you’ve ever waited in a long lineup at a Service Ontario location to renew your health card, you may be in luck.

The Ministry of Health has posted a notice online asking for feedback on a regulatory change that would allow for the government to develop a new web-based system for health card renewals.

Currently, appointments for card renewals can be booked in advance online, but otherwise the majority of citizens still have to visit Service Ontario centres. There are a few exceptions, though, with children younger than 15-and-a-half and the majority of seniors over 80 being able to renew their cards by mail.

Ontarians will be able to give feedback on this proposal until June 5th, although it is unknown when this potential service might come into effect.

This news follows the province’s push in the 2017 budget to offer a greater number of services online and on mobile devices, such as immunization records, educational courses and car insurance “pink slips.”
