Bell MTS — the Manitoba subsidiary of the Canadian telecommunication giant — is looking to influence the next generation of IoT innovators.
The Manitoba-based telecommunications company donated $500,000 CAD to the University of Manitoba’s (UM) Front and Centre campaign, to launch the Bell MTS Innovations in Agriculture Program.
The new program seeks to provide UM students with the opportunity to develop Internet of Things (IoT) applications in agriculture and food services.
“Working on IoT solutions within the agriculture, food, and nutrition sectors not only offers our students a unique skills development opportunity that will support their future career opportunities, it is critical to the advancement of our agriculture and food economy,” said Karin Wittenberg, dean of the faculty of agricultural and food sciences, in a media release.
Agriculture accounts for approximately five percent of Manitoba’s GDP.
An investment into Manitoba’s agricultural future is a savvy move on Bell MTS’s part, especially in the wake of the recent 2017 merger between Bell and MTS (Manitoba Telecom Services).
“Bell MTS fully appreciates the vital contributions our country’s top schools are making to technology design and development,” said Stephen Howe, Bell’s CTO and executive vice president, in the same release.
According to the campaign website, the University of Manitoba launched its Front and Centre campaign to help ensure the province’s “long-term economic, social, and cultural viability.”
The Front and Centre campaign hopes to raise $500 million.
