Along with the reveal of the Moto Z2 Play, Motorola has also shown off a variety of new Moto Mods designed to work with the upcoming smartphone, as well as the original Moto Z Play, Moto Z, and presumably the inevitable Moto Z2.
While many have questioned the usefulness of Motorola’s various mods, the manufacturer is staying the course with its modular strategy unlike competitors such as LG. This year’s LG G6 ditched the G5’s modular approach to smartphone accessories in favour of a significantly better designed phone when compared to its predecessor.
Motorola’s Moto Mods, however, are significantly better in a variety of ways when compared to LG’s approach to modularity. They’re easier to attach to the smartphone and can be popped on and off in just a few seconds, feature better build quality, and in most cases, are actually cheaper.
Moto GamePad
The first new Moto Mod announced is the Gamevice-like Moto GamePad. This mod allows users to transform the Moto Z into a handheld gaming console that resembles a tiny Nintendo Switch. The GamePad includes dual control sticks, a D-pad and four action buttons. It also features a sizable 1,035mAh battery.
While unique, for a mod like this to be useful a game first needs to be compatible with external controllers — something few Android games typically support.
JBL SoundBoost 2
The successor to the original JBL SoundBoost Moto Mod, the SoundBoost 2 features 10 hours of playback time and features a water-repellant coating. It comes in either red, blue or black and features a “more premium design with fabric and improved contours,” according to Motorola.
Motorola says that the accessories’ app has also been revamped to allow users to customize sound to exactly how they want it, whether they’re listening to music or watching a video content.
Moto TurboPower Pack
The Moto TurboPower Pack is back, adding an extra day of battery life to the Moto Z2 Play, according to Motorola. The company says the charging accessory is capable of charging the Z2 Play to 50 percent capacity in just 20 minutes.
Moto Style Shell with Wireless Charging
Unlike last year’s Moto Style Shells, this year’s iteration of the Mod features wireless charging. The mod is capable of adding wireless charging (up to 10w) to the Moto Z in what the company is calling an “ultra-sleek, stylish-design.
Specific Canadian pricing availability for the Moto Z2 Play and Motorola’s new Moto mods has not been announced yet. However, U.S. pricing is as follows: Moto TurboPower Pack starting at $79.99 USD, Moto Style Shell with Wireless Charging at $39.99 USD, JBL SoundBoost 2 at $79.99 USD and Moto GamePad at $79.99 USD.
