Apple has revealed a new 10.5-inch Retina display iPad Pro at WWDC in San Jose, California. The tablets retains the light one pound weight of the iPad while being 20 percent larger than the most popular 9.7-inch device.
As well, Apple says borders surrounding the screen have been reduced by nearly 40 percent. A 12.9-inch variant was also revealed. These increased sizes leave space for a full-size physical smart keyboard which will support over 30 languages, including Chinese and Japanese JIS.
The devices will also have what Apple is calling the “most advanced displays on the planet” that are “smoother, crisper and more responsive.” These are made possible through the new ProMotion feature, which supports 120 Hz refresh rate. Previously, iPads only supported 60 Hz.
The new iPad Pros will also dynamically adjust the refresh rate depending on what the user is doing with the devices, with certain actions, such as viewing still images, requiring a lower Hz count. As a result, Apple says this will allow for better battery life. Apple Pencil is also enhanced by ProMotion to allow for responses of 20 milliseconds.
Other specs include:
- A10X Fusion chip
- 6 core CPU
- 30 percent faster CPU
- 40 percent faster graphics performance
- 500X faster than the original iPad
- 4 times better than i7 desktop PC
- HDR for 4K video capture
- “TrueTone” display allows for 50 percent brighter screens
- 12-megapixel rear-facing camera along with a 7-megapixel front-facing camera
- Both models support up to 10 hours usage on a single charge
The new iPad Pros will initially ship with iOS 10, but can later be updated with the newly announced iOS 11 as it launches in the fall.
The 10.5-inch model will start at $869 CAD for a model with 64GB of memory, $999 for 256GB or $1,259 for 512GB. For cellular versions of the smaller model, it will cost $1039 for 64GB, $1,169 for 256GB or $1,429 for 512GB.
The 12.9-inch version, on the other hand, will cost $1,049 for 64GB of storage, $1,179 for 256 GB or $1,439 for 512GB. Cellular tablets are priced at $1,219 for 64GB, $1,349 for 256GB or $1,609 for 512GB.
Apple Canada’s website has the iPad Pros available to order, with shipments estimated to take place within four business days.
Today’s announcements follows the release of an updated iPad (formerly known as Air 2) in March, which begins at $449 CAD.
