At Sony’s E3 2017 keynote presentation, the tech giant revealed new gameplay footage of a variety of titles, starting off the show with a stream of reveals and in-game trailers.
The first major reveal consisted of snow-covered DLC for blockbuster exclusive title Horizon Zero Dawn, followed by gameplay footage of Sony Bend’s zombie survival game Days Gone and God of War, Sony Santa Monica’s effort to reboot the ultra-violent popular third-person action franchise by humanizing its main character, Kratos.
Another game exclusive to Sony’s platform is Detroit: Become Human, the next interactive narrative adventure from developer Quantic Dream, the studio behind Heavy Rain and Beyond Two Souls.
While little is known about the title, it seems to take place in a dystopian future where robotic humans called Androids are vying for their freedom. It’s worth noting that despite being announced in October 2015, the game still hasn’t been given a release year, so it’s unclear if the game will cone out in 2017, 2018 or beyond.
Fan-favourite title Shadow of the Colossus, a game originally released on the PS2 in 2005, is also getting a remake for PS4 featuring modern-day visuals. The game is set to come out in 2018.
PlayStation VR got some spotlight as well with the announcement of several new titles. Firstly, The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim is confirmed to be coming to Sony’s PlayStation VR platform, adding first-person virtual reality to the over four-year-old game. Footage was also revealed for space platformer Star Child and horror game Inpatient.
Other VR titles included a new shooter called Bravo Team and a quirky action adventure title staring a mouse called Moss. Final Fantasy XV also had its VR content detailed after being announced at last year’s E3, featuring first-person fishing mini-games.
The final exclusive shown off was Insomniac Games’ Spider Man, marking a return to video games for the wall-crawler. Nearly ten minutes of web-slinging combat, stealth and city traversal was shown off, culminating in the reveal of fan-favourite Miles Morales and a release window of 2018.
Outside of the major exclusive reveals, Sony also showed off footage of Capcom’s Monster Hunter World, a series with a massive following in the United States that hasn’t quite found quite as substantial of an audience in North America and Europe.
Another Capcom showing came in the form of a trailer for crossover fighter Marvel vs. Capcom Infinite, which revealed new playable characters and confirmed a story mode demo for release on the PlayStation Store later today.
As well, additional footage was revealed for Activision’s ultra-popular Call of Duty franchise, which is set to make a return to WW2. Destiny 2, which features exclusive content on the PS4, was also given a new gameplay trailer.
Overall, as in previous years, Sony put on a solid, yet predictable showing, placing an emphasis on game’s exclusive to the PlayStation 4. This is in stark contrast to the approach Microsoft took this year, with the company focusing on third-party titles with timed exclusivity to the Xbox One in most cases. It’s worth noting that many of the PS4 exclusive titles shown off tonight were revealed at last year’s E3 and have still not been given firm release windows.
