Online streaming giant YouTube adds profiles to YouTube Kids app

YouTube Kids app

YouTube has announced a YouTube Kids update that adds additional parental controls and a new theme designed for children to the app.

Users can now create a profile for each child in their household that’s available across all compatible devices. Within the profile there’s also now the option to enter the child’s date of birth, which changes how the app looks. Younger children will get less text, while older kids will can view more content on the app’s home screen.

YouTube has also changed the setup process for the app, adding the option to create user specific passcodes.

The streaming service says that while the app attempts to filter mature content, the system isn’t perfect. So whenever a user finds a video that shouldn’t be located in the YouTube Kids app, users can block and flag it so that the streaming service is able to review and potentially remove it.

YouTube Kids’ profile update is rolling out in the following markets: Argentina, Australia, Brazil, Canada, Chile, Colombia, Ghana, India, Jamaica, Japan, Kenya, Malaysia, Mexico, Nepal, New Zealand, Nigeria, Pakistan, Peru, Philippines, Singapore, South Africa, South Korea, Sri Lanka, Tanzania, Uganda, United States, Zimbabwe.
