It looks like Jeff Bezos found his Game of Thrones.
Confirming rumours that were swirling earlier this month, via Twitter the co-founder and current swole CEO of Amazon has confirmed that the tech giant is working on a television adaptation of the Lord of the Rings series. The twist here, however, is that the television series will actually be a prequel to The Lord of the Rings films, rather than a recreation of the story many are likely already familiar with.
Given that Peter Jackson’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit series achieved such a monumental level of popularity, it seems like a strange decision for the tech giant to retread the property again in the form of a television show. Amazon also notes that its deal includes a potential spin-off series set in the Lord of the Rings universe as well.
In a press release, Amazon said the following about the new show, emphasizing that it will focus on storylines that come before The Fellowship of the Ring. Given Amazon likely wants to create an edgy show that rivals Game of Thrones in the sex, violence and of course, incest department, creating a prequel show gives the company significantly more freedom.
So while mainstays like Frodo Baggins, Bilbo Baggins and good old Sauron may make an appearance, they likely won’t be the focus of this show.
It’s unclear when Amazon plans to release its television adaptation of The Lord of the Rings.
