After teasing yesterday that he would soon have more information to share on the Galaxy S9 and S9+, perennial leaker Evan Blass has published an extensive report on the two upcoming flagship devices.
According to Blass, Samsung — in a break with how the company has done things in the past — will show off the Galaxy S9 at the upcoming Consumer Electronics Show (CES) in Las Vegas, Nevada.
CES is scheduled to start on January 9th, 2018, meaning that Samsung fans will get a chance to see the company’s new pair of flagship devices more than a month-and-half earlier than in the past. That said, the S9 likely won’t be available any earlier than in past years; Blass notes that Samsung will host an official launch event in March 2017.
As for the phone itself, Blass says to expect a mostly iterative update on the Galaxy S8.
Citing a single source briefed on the company’s plans, Blass says the two smartphones look almost identical to their predecessors. The one major design change is that both smartphones will feature a fingerprint sensor that is vertically aligned with the phone’s camera module, addressing one of the most frequent complaints people had with the S8 series.
Additionally, while there were relatively minor internal differences between the S8 and S8+, there will be more differences between the S9 and the S9+. In addition to featuring a larger 6.2-inch ‘Infinity’ display that the S9, the S9+ will reportedly feature more RAM (6GB as opposed to 4GB) and a second rear-facing camera.
Otherwise, the two phones will be identical, with both devices including the newest 10-nanometre processors from either Qualcomm or Samsung. Moreover, both the S9 and S9+ will include 64GB of expandable storage and a 3.5mm headphone jack, as well as speakers built by AKG.
