The number of software and hardware issues afflicting the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are long and seemingly getting longer still. However, Android 8.1, which recently entered its second developer preview, looks like it will solve at least some of those problems.
Over on Reddit, dedicated Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 users have started documenting the improvements Google is introducing with 8.1 DP2. Among them is a fix for the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL’s video recording functionality. Specifically, with their current release software, the two phones record audio during video capture that is, in a word, poor.
In the two videos below, you can hear the drastic difference between how audio capture sounds on 8.0 and 8.1 DP2. Both videos were captured by Pixel 2 XL owner Jose Nieves.
According to a separate Reddit post, it appears Google was able to address the issue by using a different mic on the Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 record audio. Previously, it was the bottom-facing mic on both phones that recorded audio during video capture. With DP2, it’s now the top mic that’s on audio recording duties.
In another bit of good news, it appears Google has also addressed the Pixel 2 XL’s unresponsive edge issue with DP2. This issue caused the edges of the smartphone’s display to have trouble registering taps.
No word yet on when Google will release 8.1 to non-beta users. It’s fair to say, however, a stable release can’t come soon enough.
