A recent report indicates that Google has plans to launch a new music and video streaming platform, according to Bloomberg. The service is set to launch this coming March under the name ‘Remix,’ according to the publication.
Remix will combine YouTube Red, a paid YouTube video streaming service that still hasn’t made its way to Canada, and Google Play Music, the tech giant’s streamlined music streaming platform. Remix will reportedly offer both music and video, combing both forms of content unified one unified service, says The Verge.
YouTube has already signed on the Warner Music Group, one of the world’s three major record labels to support the platform. YouTube is also in talks with Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group, according to Bloomberg’s sources. Bloomberg also claims YouTube reached out to artists to seek assistance in promoting the new service, though doesn’t provide more details on the partnerships.
Before YouTube’s Remix launches, deals need to be negotiated with the two aforementioned music labels. Google will also likely be required to come to come sort of agreement with Vevo, which distributes music for Universal and Sony.
YouTube hired Lyor Cohen, a former Warner Music executive, earlier this year, with many of Google Play Music’s staff being folded into the tech giant’s YouTube division.
All things considered, if these rumours are true, this is YouTube’s third attempt at a streaming service, after YouTube Music Key in 2014 and YouTube Red in 2016.
