A Google developer has stated in the Android Auto user community forums that Google’s Pixel and Nexus devices will now work wirelessly with some third-party Android Auto in-car entertainment units.
Wireless for Android Auto was first announced at Google I/O in 2017. Since then, Kenwood, Pioneer and JVC have all announced car units that support the wireless features.
Until today, however, no phones supported the platform.
There are currently six phones that are supported: the Nexus 5x and 6P, as well as all four versions of the Google Pixel.
All of these phones have to be running at least Android 8.0 Oreo with the latest version of Android Auto (3.1) installed as well.
The developer who confirmed that the Google-made phones now support wireless auto connectivity also stated that the Android Auto team is “actively working with phone manufacturers on adding software compatibility and hopes to share more updates soon.”
No vehicles offer wireless Android Auto as of yet, but between Kenwood, JVC and Pioneer there are about nine different head units that can be installed in a car as aftermarket units.
However, it doesn’t appear that any of those units are sold in Canada yet.
