Google Maps users are reporting that the service is now pointing out landmarks to improve the directions it offers.
For example, what had previously been “turn right onto Blue Jays Way” may instead come out as “turn right by the Pizza Nova.”
The feature was first spotted by CNET senior editor Scott Stein and Twitter user @iamdeemah, who confirmed that Google Maps was telling them to make turns after local fast food restaurants.
Google Maps told me to make a right “right after the White Castle.” Does it do that now?

So @googlemaps instructed me to “turn right after Burger King” … I think this is the best update yet. #mindblown

When reached for comment, Google told Engadget that this is just one feature that it is testing with some users to improve guidance, although no word was given on wider roll out plans.
Still, it’s interesting to see how more the kinds of directions one might give to a friend in person are being considered for digital map services as well.
