Transport Canada has issued a recall on multiple years of Tesla’s Model S due to a risk that could cause the power steering to cut out.

The recall is issued for Model S vehicles that were manufactured from 2012 until 2016.

The main issue is a bolt that attaches the power steering gear assist motor to the gear housing. This bolt has a chance of corroding and breaking, which can cause the power steering assist motor to shift, the belt to slip off and the power steering to stop functioning.

The sudden loss of power steering could increase the risk of a crash if it catches drivers unaware.

Tesla service centres will replace the aluminum bolts with steel bolts and apply a corrosion-prevention sealant around the bolts. If the bolts are found to be broken, Tesla will also replace the steering gear.
