Last fall, Sonos announced that in 2018 it planned to update some of its speakers to support Apple’s AirPlay 2 Wi-Fi streaming protocol.
At the time, the company was vague on the exact details of its planned implementation. Now, in a new announcement initially made to MacObserver, Sonos has revealed that later this year it will update the Sonos One, Sonos Play:5 and Playbase to support the standard.
The company’s older speakers — like the Play:1 — won’t be updated to add native AirPlay 2 support to their feature set.
However, Sonos users will still be able to use AirPlay 2 with the company’s older speakers as long as they also have at least one of the three supported models in their home. For example, Play:1 owners will be able to use AirPlay 2 if they also have a Sonos One speaker on the same Wi-Fi network.
Additionally, as part of the forthcoming update, Sonos users will be to speak to Siri, via their iPhone or iPad, to control Apple Music playback.
Sonos did not provide an exact timeline for when it plans to release the update, though it appears the company is still on track to release it later this year.
