Bell has announced that it’s expanding its all-fibre network to more than 28,000 of Clarington, Ontario’s approximately 95,000 residents.
The rollout is part of Bell’s goal to bring fibre to the premises (FTTP) to the GTA and 905 regions. This comes on the heels of Bell’s announcement to expand its FTTP network to Oshawa last week and turning on Toronto’s all-fibre network early in April.
The FTTP network will initially support speeds of 1Gbps and will be capable of up to 40Gbps in the future. It will also be the backbone of Bell’s Fibe TV and ALT TV services, as well as business and data centre solutions.
The carrier is funding the expansion and partnering with the Municipality of Clarington.
“The Mayor and staff in Clarington have been instrumental in providing the access we need to roll out this major project as quickly and efficiently as possible,” said Bruce Furlong, Bell’s vice president of network.
“This is a major initiative that has been years in the making, and we’re very excited that our community will have access to state-of-the-art broadband connectivity, a service that is no longer a wish but rather a necessity,” said mayor of Clarington Adrian Foster, in a statement sent to MobileSyrup.
Clarington is one of of eight municipalities in the Durham Region and is located on the eastern border of the GTA. The municipality covers roughly 612 square kilometres.
