It’s the camera update Essential Phone enthusiasts have been waiting for for a while.
On Thursday, Essential released an update for the PH-1 that the company says makes the phone’s camera faster to take pictures “across all modes, including Burst mode.”

Back when I reviewed the Essential Phone, one of the most frustrating issues I noted with the device was how slow the camera was to launch and take photos, so this update comes as a welcome surprise. I installed the new camera app this morning. I’m happy to report the camera feels faster across the board. Earlier camera app updates and the move to Android 8.1 helped with this issue, but this feels like another significant step in the right direction.
In an interview with Business Insider, Linda Jiangm, Essential’s head of industrial design, promised the company would deliver a better camera experience with its next phone. “In general, one thing that we got hit hard with was the quality of our camera, and we’re really looking forward to improving that with our next-gen, making sure that we’re listening to our customers and their pain points… We can say, we heard you and we’re going to do it better on the second-gen for sure,” said Jiangm.

Earlier in the week, the Essential Phone reached end-of-life status at Telus.
