Twitter is developing end-to-end encrypted DMs

Forgot negotiating your crypto deals on Signal, Twitter might be your future spot for encrypted chats.

The social media platform is testing direct messages with end-to-end encryption, as revealed by Jane Manchun Wong. A series of screen shots posted by the user show an option to “Start a secret text message” in the conversation info section with another user.

There’s also an “Encryption settings” section that holds the encryption keys of yourself and the recipient.

Wong found the option inside the the Twitter for Android application package, which often contains code for unlaunched features in testing.

Whistleblower Edward Snowden asked for the feature way back in December 2016, with CEO Jack Dorsey responding that the platform would think about adding such a feature in the future.

Now it seems the option will soon debut to the public, adding a helpful level of privacy and security for journalists, activists and future whistleblowers — as well as anyone else that values high levels of privacy in their person-to-person communications.
