OnePlus does not plan to sell the OnePlus 7, its new, lower-cost alternative to the OnePlus 7 Pro, in North America.
Instead, the company will continue to offer the OnePlus 6T to consumers in Canada and the U.S. who want to purchase a new OnePlus smartphone but don’t want to spend the extra money needed to afford the company’s latest flagship. To make up for the missing OP7, OnePlus is discounting the price of the 8GB/128GB and 8GB/256GB 6T models by $40, making them $729 and $799, respectively.
This is a new strategy for OnePlus, which has typically discontinued its past flagship when introducing a new phone.
In a statement issued to MobileSyrup, a OnePlus spokesperson said the following of the move:
“At OnePlus, we’ve consistently delivered the best smartphone technology because we are committed to providing premium products and experiences for consumers. As OnePlus continues to grow, the company will naturally need to adapt and expand its product portfolio. The OnePlus 7 Pro is an ultra-premium flagship device that is uniquely positioned to meet the needs of North American users. As a breakthrough device with capabilities that match or exceed what is currently available on the North American market, and an industry-leading display that sets a new standard for smoothness, the OnePlus 7 Pro offers the best possible smartphone experience for consumers. We will continue to sell the OnePlus 6T alongside the OnePlus 7 Pro for users looking for a premium flagship experience.”
While the OnePlus 7 isn’t a significant upgrade over the 6T, it features a couple of notable enhancements. To start, the 7 includes a newer processor — the Snapdragon 855, instead of last year’s Snapdragon 845. It also includes faster UFS 3.0 storage.
In Canada, the OnePlus 7 Pro starts at $993. The mid-tier model, with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of internal storage, costs $1,038 CAD, putting it in the same price category as the iPhone XR and Galaxy S10e.
