The Government of Canada has announced the creation of an advisory council aimed to expand the country’s strength in AI while maintaining Canadian values.
Navdeep Bains, minister of innovation, science and economic development, made the announcement at the G7 meeting of Digital Ministers in Paris.
The council, titled the Advisory Council on Artificial Intelligence, will include researchers, academics and business executives.
According to the government, it will use AI to improve the health of Canadians and to aid in the fight against climate change.AI will also potentially create new jobs and sustain economic growth.
“Artificial intelligence has enormous potential to help us design the responsive digital services that Canadians demand, but it must be used ethically and responsibly,” said the Honourable Joyce Murray, president of the treasury board and minister of digital government, in a press release.
The council will advise the government on how to increase Canada’s strength in AI, and identify opportunities for economic growth.
Canada has more than 800 AI companies, and the number is increasing by 28 percent each year.
The government is keen on upholding a human-centric approach to AI, which focuses on human rights, openness and transparency.
