As is customary at Apple’s yearly WWDC conference, the tech giant has revealed what software updates it’s been cooking up for its popular smartwatch. Here’s a look at some of the new watchOS 10 features highlighted at the keynote.
To begin, the company has introduced two new watch faces. The first is ‘Palette,’ which depicts time in three distinct overlapping layers, with colours that shift as the time changes through the day. The second is ‘Snoopy,’ which sees the comic book character come to life with dynamic animations.
- Other elements of the interface have also been spruced up, including dynamic background colours in the world clock that reflect the time of day, as well as a new portrait photo watch face option.
- A new function that will hopefully prove useful is the ability to quickly rotate the Apple Watch’s digital crown, revealing widgets in a smart stack layout.
The company has also introduced a new ‘Mindfulness’ app, which is being pitched as a way to help users log their mental health and wellbeing.
- A number of fitness and health-related additions are also on the way to the watch. New fitness waypoints are being introduced for both cellular connections and emergency calls. Additionally, an activity app update brings an new fullscreen view for move, exercise and stand functions.
Those with Myopia (nearsightedness) will also benefit from a new risk reduction feature, which uses the ambient light sensor to detect the amount of time spent out in sunlight during the day.
- Finally, new developer APIs are being introduced to better detect high-frequency motion data, which will hopefully result in richer app experiences over time.
