At Apple’s 2023 launch event, the company unveiled the Apple Watch Ultra 2.
The Apple Watch Ultra 2 includes all the same new features as the Apple Watch Series 9 and its S9 chip, including the double-tap gesture to turn off alarms, hang up phone calls and more. These gestures are done by quickly pinching your thumb and forefinger together twice.
However, it’s worth noting that Double Tap won’t be on the Ultra 2 at launch, and instead will arrive in October.
Further, it features ultra wideband (UWB) so that you can easily find your smartphone and other ultra wideband products like an AirTag. The addition of the S9 chip also allows for Siri on-device. This allows your voice interactions to be more private while also making some questions faster. It also means you can use Siri when working out with your watch if your phone is at home.
Apple Watch Ultra 2 specific features include a 3000 nits display. This is Apple’s brightest display ever, and it’s 1,000 nits brighter than the new Series 9. This should make the watch extremely visible in direct sunlight and a more functional flashlight. On the other side of the spectrum, the display can also be lowered to a measly one nit of brightness to make it dim in dark rooms or at night.
Alongside this is a new Modular Ultra watch face that shows altitude and depth with each passing second. Further, the night mode, which turns the watch face red, uses an ambient light sensor that automatically activates in the dark. This is more intuitive than having to turn it on manually like the previous Apple Watch Ultra.
It also offers advanced metrics while you’re running, and with cycling, you can use Bluetooth accessories to measure cadence, speed and power. Apple claims the Watch Ultra 2 features 36 hours on a single charge and up to 72 hours in low-power mode. Finally, the case also includes 95 percent titanium recycled material, which makes it more eco-friendly.
