HTC posted another poor showing in its February 2014 consolidated earnings details. The company posted approximately $238 million in revenue, down 36% from the same time a year ago, and 25% from January.
The Taiwanese company is trying to weather the storm as it waits for the introduction of its newest smartphone, the all-new HTC One, which will be announced on March 25th. They launched two smartphones at MWC this year, the low-end Desire 610 and mid-range Desire 816, both answers to promises of trying to reach markets with lower cost thresholds in 2014.
The company is also weathering rumoured poachings of its Taiwanese engineers by Apple. According to the Wall Street Journal, Apple is hiring Chinese and Taiwanese engineers to “speed product development and introduce a wider range of devices,” according to a source.
Apple already performs most of its manufacturing in China, but is adding to its local engineering pool in the region “to drive new iPhone product development.” The move also localizes a pool of talent in a market which Apple deems increasingly important; the company just launched the iPhone 5s and 5c on China Mobile, the country’s biggest telco.
