BlackBerry closing its movie and music portals prior to Amazon transition

In addition to partnering with Amazon on its Appstore in BlackBerry 10.3, BlackBerry is set to shutter its little-used music and movie portals on July 21st.

While former purchases will continue to be available, BlackBerry announced that it will rely on third-party apps such as Netflix, Crackle and others to provide movie downloads.

The move underlines BlackBerry’s continued cost-cutting measures as it attempts to shed some of the weight of its former self. Keeping BlackBerry World focused on native enterprise apps while allowing great consumer content to filter through Amazon’s Appstore is likely the best-case scenario for both parties. Amazon benefits from a new customer base to rely on its growing app ecosystem, while BlackBerry no longer has to worry about approving app submissions.
